When our son lost his first tooth, it was late evening, and all we had in the house was a $20 bill. We explained that it must be because the first tooth is so special. Afterward, we polled our friends, and found that the average amount was $5 so he has gotten that ever since. I saw one clever explanation on line from another parent that the Tooh Fairy sets out with a set amount of money each night, and depending on how many children she has to visit, that is how the money is divided up. More children=less money per tooth and less children=more money per tooth.
